Shinyoshiwara Hand Towel by BEAMS JAPAN
Shinyoshiwara is a brand by designer Yayoi Okano who grew up in the Yoshiwara area of Asakusa, Tokyo, a historical red light district. As the town gradually lost its infamous reputation, the designer launched the brand to capture the dramatic lives of the people she read and heard about.
A tenugui, or flat towel, is a long rectangular piece of lightweight cotton traditionally used in Japan as a washcloth or handkerchief. These towels are very compact when folded and are quick to dry. They are hand-dyed in a traditional chu-sen method that lays paste onto the fabric to act as stencils and dyes from both sides, creating a distinctive ink bleed that is not seen in machine printing. With use, the fabric will grow into a softer texture.
